Taxpayers revolt in Washington D.C. forecasts results of the Judgment Day 2010 Elections.

When 75K protesters show up and fill the mall in DC, event the Dems had better take notice. The taxpayers are mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore.

Protesters March on Washington

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of demonstrators descended on Capitol Hill Saturday, protesting the expansion of government spending and illustrating the network of conservative activists that has emerged in opposition to President Barack Obama's policies.

Organizers said they believed people from all 50 states came for the "Taxpayer March on Washington." Crowds filled nearly every pocket of open space near the west lawn of the Capitol, many standing and listening without a view of the stage. They marched from Freedom Plaza, adjacent to the White House, as shouts of "U.S.A." echoed through downtown Washington and marchers dressed as colonials banged drums. Some people stayed stranded on Constitution Avenue as the program began near the Capitol, unable to find room to watch the speakers.

A spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services estimated the crowd at "in excess of 75,000" people. Local and federal law enforcement authorities don't provide crowd estimates.

The gathering was largely peaceful. Speakers and demonstrators said they opposed Democratic plans to overhaul health care, as well as the bank bailouts of the past year. "It's not about health care, it's about Obama seizing our freedom," said one sign. Opposition to climate-change bills moving through Congress was also on display, with coal workers in hard-hat helmets lining the front of the stage during a speech about energy.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Waterloo!" Mr. DeMint said to a wave of roaring applause, referring to a widely quoted comment he made earlier this summer, professing hope that Mr. Obama failed in his quest for health care overhaul. "If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo," Mr. DeMint told conservative activists on a conference call in July. "It will break him."

"While some are prepared to write the obituary on capitalism and the conservative movement, I believe we are on the verge of a great American awakening," Mr. Pence told the crowd. "And it will begin here and begin now and begin with you."

Mike, are you on the verge of a great American awakening again? You sounded just as enthusiastic about your tea-bagging event too, but you have never told us whether it came up to your expectations.

75 K demonstrators from all 50 states you have? Poor show. I have been on demonstrations with a far larger participation, although we have far less inhabitants here.

The political landscape in

The political landscape in the US has changed dramatically in the last 6 months as Obama's numbers tank. Political analysis on the Sunday talking head shows are predicting 20 or more seats in the house will change hands.

I have been on demonstrations with a far larger participation, although we have far less inhabitants here.

I'm sure you have. I observed the recent demonstrations in Germany where the Leftists sought to deny conservatives their right to express their opinion. Not surprising.

What is relevant here is the fact that Conservatives by nature are NOT radical and do NOT demonstrate (at least in the US) on a large scale. The Tea Party movement has struck a visceral chord with the silent majority and many people are becoming politically active for the first time in their lives. This is the largest Conservative backlash demonstration in history. It grew remarkably fast and shows no sign of slowing.

In other words, it is not the size of this demonstration that matters as much as its rate of growth in the honeymoon year of the Messiah and the passion people bring to it.

I must have missed something. What do you mean?

"What is relevant here is the fact that Conservatives ... do NOT demonstrate (at least in the US) on a large scale."

True. They have other means to express themselves. The press is usually all ear. Not surprising, who after all owns most of it?

"In other words, it is not the size of this demonstration that matters as much ..."

Oh yes, it matters!

Alan, I remember a demonstration in our (then) capital village Bonn. 1.5 million, and I was one of them. It took me at least 7 hours to get there. Now I wonder how many people could reach Washington in 7 hours, if they really wanted to join this "Obama-is-after-our-freedom" nonsense? It's not exactly like your 3 traffic-lights county over there, isn't it?

Obviously, my country is not

Obviously, my country is not nearly as f*cked up as yours. We don't have near as many p*ssed off.

By the way... It takes me seven hours just to drive across Tennessee. It took me 16 hours to drive to a meeting just outside of D.C. a couple years ago. And I'm east of the Mississippi. The half of the country, west of the Mississippi, is even father than I am. Sure, there are a lot of people within 7 hours of D.C., but there are a heck of a lot outside that ring. And, like Mike said, it's the youthful liberals who usually show up to protests, not old conservatives. Old conservatives use other means to express their views. To get 75,000 conservatives to attend a protest is pretty shocking in this country. Minimize it all you want. You simply don't understand.

Thanks for the lesson in geography, but actually that wasn't entirely new.

Our country was indeed very much fucked up then: a rogue state wanted to station even more of its nukes and our criminal government agreed to that (yes, on that occasion they were actually asked). But this is only by the way.

You seem surprised that we would ask. Granted, there were a few years in the forties where we didn't bother asking. But, I'm pretty sure, we've mutually agreed on the best way for the United States to fund, and man, the defenses of Western Europe since the late forties/early fifties. But, anytime y'all want to do it entirely on your own, just say the word. (Not specifically you... I mean your elected representatives.)

The few years in the forties stretched to 1990, actually. The nuclear mines along the German-German border for instance were installed there very probably without the knowledge of our government. But we are digressing badly.

That sort of denigration, trivialization, and minimization of an opposing viewpoint does not eliminate the opposition, nor de-legitimize it. Your characterization is just the flip side of a racist saying, "Obama only got elected because n***gers voted for a fellow n***ger." Both versions are equally despicable. Yours is just worded slightly less offensively, because there is no "white dudes" term on a par with "n***ger." The sentiment is the same in both statements, however.

Alan,

Bullshit. Investigate the messages and speeches. Look at the signs these losers tote. The bulk of the protesters have no specific complaint with Obama’s health care proposals. Confederate flags, guys wearing T-shirts saying guns are great and diversity is stupid, protesters saying that abortion is murder and/or that Barack Obama is in league with terrorists. Or "thank you Glen Beck". Nobody had a sign urging the president to adopt more stringent cost control measures, or slamming the concept of regulations to require insurers to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions.

My characterization is accurate, you may not like it, but it is observed and very, very real. If you think that simply labeling my statement as extreme, without any evidence, (because I have all kinds of evidence) is somehow sufficient, I got news for you bud. It ain't.

No doubt, there are some racists among the crowd, who only oppose Obama because of their racist views. Likewise, I'm sure there are African Americans who voted for Obama only because he is black. But: "75,000 white dudes flaunting their racism and ignorance" implies that all of them are racists. It is as racist as saying all African Americans, who voted for Obama, did so because he was black. Two sides of the same coin.

Which ones do you think the "liberal media" will focus on? The average Joe who disagrees, or the redneck with a racist poster?

My characterization is accurate, you may not like it, but it is observed and very, very real.

I have no doubt that is is very real...for you...and consistent with the news sources with which you choose to validate your reality.

Too bad it's just not accurate.

Who are the protestors?

One reporter summed it up; Griff Jenkins from the Fox Network travelled with the Tea Party Express from Sacramento to D.C. visiting numerous cities and towns and said that after witnessing people across the country it is the America that Washington forgot” and an ‘absolute grass roots movement and it’s an uprising; we are witnessing the beginning of a new political movement”. He went on to say “it is, as best I can tell, (that) they are a part of America rising up to reclaim itself from a government run amok; an overreaching government’.
Most interviewed had never protested or been to a demonstration before either for or against anything. The observation is that they are a collection of ordinary Americans who want both political parties to stop with the corruption, stop the out of control spending and just listen to them.

The mainstream media (and Brendan) invariably label the demonstrators as ‘conservatives’. That term has many definitions and is interpreted by individuals and groups alike. A great percentage of people that showed up Saturday have a strong libertarian streak (something Congressman Ron Paul of Texas harnessed in the Republican primaries and beyond – the Ron Paul Revolution still continues

The yellow Gadsden flags were out in force probably summing up the overall message from the crowds “Don’t Tread on Me”. Many invoked the Founding Fathers and their principles with Thomas Jefferson the favorite from whom they cited. Many parents used the day and the lead up to it as a civics lesson for their children urging them to read up on history and find apt quotes with which they agreed.

These were then transposed into the thousands of handmade signs which people held up for hours.Signs, signs everywhere a sign. Those lyrics from almost 40 years ago have been apt at these rallies and town halls. In fact, some say that, apart from meeting people and expressing their views, they most thoroughly enjoy reading the signs. Creativity is not dead as the slideshow indicates.

There is a lot of humor and jest; so much for the angry mob. Most signs and t-shirts were not Anti-Obama in a personal sense though it would be disingenuous to suggest there was not a small element of people who were not in the tank for Obama and refused to drink the Kool Aid. Of course this is no different to folk who refused to acknowledge that George W. Bush was a legitimate President since the 2000 election.

By far, the majority who have been showing up to town halls and tea parties and getting involved online and in their local districts are not overly partisan. They worry about the direction the country is taking and the ever expanding increase in the federal government.

The irony is your dismissal of the only major news media to provide unbiased coverage of the event. Little wonder you dance happily in a delusional world of make believe. Sure, tell yourself and your compatriots that all the demonstrators are racist rednecks. Pay no attention to the seniors and people of all colors and political affiliations whose only common bond is an unwillingness to bow down to the Messiah's plan to re-make the country in his own ideology.

While you are busy consoling yourself, the American people will be cleaning house. And when its done, you can denigrate anyone and everyone you choose. Who cares?

And thanks to those protestors, you will still have the option to come south to our country when you want the healthcare, entrepreneurial opportunity, and freedoms you forfeit in your own.

Oh yes, Fox network, Mike. We have been waiting for something unbiased.

People who have never been for or against anything, because they were never interested in politics: now, all of a sudden, they are in the streets. What a nice successful campaign. And they still have no idea what they are for or against.

Momo,

Now we're back to the "bear shit curve." The liberal media can find a few racists to portray the whole group. Fox can find a batch of preachers and pregnant mothers to portray it. Those are both ends of the spectrum. But, if you understand the bear shit curve, you'll realize most of the protesters are probably just normal, working-man/woman, concerned, average Joes.

What (I think) Momo and

What (I think) Momo and Brendan both fail to acknowledge, (just like Obama and the current batch of Democrats fail to) is: This has been done before. The Clintons tried it too. Especially Hillary. And they approached it with the same attitude expressed by Brendan. Hillary thought she could ram health care reform down America's throat. Hillary thought she was half again smarter than anyone else, so all should bow down to her. Anyone in opposition was merely ignorant. The only difference this time around is, they're throwing in the race issue as well:

...white dudes flaunting their racism and ignorance...
Brendan

There are a couple problems here.
First: Race had nothing to do with it when Hillary was handed back her own ass on a platter. Nor does it this time.
Second: Adding race to it this time does not de-legitimize the opposition this time.
Third: It does not matter who is smarter than who. What these idiots fail to realize is... You don't get to vote twice because you went to an Ivy League school.

Reminds me of the UK's Countryside Alliance 3 million march in London a few years ago to defend fox hunting. It took them 18 months to organise it, most people arrived on free transport with lunch provided, some with the threat of losing their jobs and homes if they didn't turn up. A few weeks later we actually upstaged them with a bigger march against the Iraq war with a few days notice and we had to pay our own bus fares.

There are two reasons why reactionaries (these are not conservatives) do not demonstrate. First of all they mostly get their own way because they're rich so they don't need to. Secondly, there are so few of them them it would usually be embarrassing. Do you really think that 75,000 is impressive for a national rally Mike?

It's been a busy day so I haven't had much time to respond. Of course, you beat me to it now that estimates are coming in putting the true attendance at up to 2 million.

Very ironic the mainstream press has minimized coverage and diminished the significance of the demonstration. Don't forget what a big deal the media made over Obama's inauguration last January at one million in what DC called the largest gathering in DC history. Eight months later, double that showed up to protest the Messiah, only to be ignored by the mainstream press.

How ironic that only the British press and Fox news provided relatively accurate coverage and even Fox under-reported the attendance.

Alan,

Of course we know that the Clintons tried a health care reform too. And we know that they are white, not black. But they had the same opponent: insurances and pharmaceutical industry who have enough money to organize a campaign.

And yes, a rally gains credibility and impact by numbers. Have you ever seen a rally with 60 participants? Pathetic. That’s why the organizers usually tend to exaggerate the numbers.

I looked at the photos in the articles you linked to, and I am afraid they don’t convince me. What was the largest demonstration you participated in? Look at the empty side streets at the edges of the photos: they wouldn’t be empty if there really had been a crowd.

Of course we know that the Clintons tried a health care reform too. And we know that they are white, not black. But they had the same opponent: insurances and pharmaceutical industry who have enough money to organize a campaign.

So we agree, race does not play a part in the opposition to this "so called" health care reform. People opposed it when the Clintons tried to ram it down our throats, and they oppose it when Obama tries the same thing. They are not opposing it just because a "black man" is trying to ram it through, regardless how Brendan wants to drag race into the equation. I'm glad we agree.

"So we agree, race does not play a part in the opposition to this "so called" health care reform. "

Race doesn't play a role in the campaign, but any opposition to Obama's politics attracts racists. If those protesters who are not racists don't mind that, I blame them of siding with racism.

Sometimes I refrained from taking part in a protest simply because I minded who else would take part--during the Gaza war for instance.

And those who disagree with the position held by the rally participants try to underestimate the numbers. Clearly, the estimate of 75,000 (or "thousands") is a joke. Have you ever walked from one end of the National Mall to the other? I have. The photos clearly show a hell of a lot more than 75,000. I've seen other photos of "large gatherings" in D.C., with estimates of one or two million, and those crowds did not appear any larger than Saturday's.

Is one million correct? Is two million correct? Beats me. But I know 75,000 is sure as hell wrong.

Alan,

I'm glad you effectively debunked the issue of race. As one commentator recently observed, when critics are forced to engage in racial politics, it demonstrates a level of desperation and inability (unwillingness) to address the issues.

No matter what your politics, it is inconceivable to me that anyone could look upon a gathering of that size and fail to respect the passion which brought them together, especially when there was no central figure responsible for organizing them. And unlike some pro-Left demonstrations, no evidence the participants were hired to be there off of Craig's List.

On the issue of racial overtones in the opposition, I tend to agree with Maureen Dowds view of recent events.

I’ve been loath to admit that the shrieking lunacy of the summer — the frantic efforts to paint our first black president as the Other, a foreigner, socialist, fascist, Marxist, racist, Commie, Nazi; a cad who would snuff old people; a snake who would indoctrinate kids — had much to do with race.

I tended to agree with some Obama advisers that Democratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoids — from Father Coughlin against F.D.R. to Joe McCarthy against Truman to the John Birchers against J.F.K. and the vast right-wing conspiracy against Bill Clinton.

But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it. NYT

She continues:

" For two centuries, the South has feared a takeover by blacks or the feds. In Obama, they have both.

The state that fired the first shot of the Civil War has now given us this: Senator Jim DeMint exhorted conservatives to “break” the president by upending his health care plan. Rusty DePass, a G.O.P. activist, said that a gorilla that escaped from a zoo was “just one of Michelle’s ancestors.” Lovelorn Mark Sanford tried to refuse the president’s stimulus money. And now Joe Wilson."

Race is surely not the impetus behind teabagger demonstrations, it is merely the venue in which racism is expressed, by racists, and tolerated by the rest.

I just love the fact that this demonstration, as "passionate" as it was, will forever be know as the Million Moron March

Momo, And, finally... What

Momo,

And, finally...

What was the largest demonstration you participated in?

You don't understand. I am part of the government. I don't protest against anything. People protest against things I do. The largest protest against something I was trying to accomplish was about five thousand. Luckily, it was broken into four different public meetings. Have you ever stood in front of over one thousand angry farmers while you're the only one with a microphone? I have. I still think they were wrong, and I was right. But, they managed to kill a great project. (At least, they killed it in my part of the world. We just moved the project and stocked elk in the other end of the state).

You see, I think we have a fundamental difference in our approaches to life, you and I. You believe the best way to make a difference it to protest, or join some little band to pick coffee beans. I will give you credit. It's very noble, and requires a degree of personal sacrifice. And, I'm sure you honestly feel you are making the world a better place.

On the other hand, I work from within the system. And, even though my main motivation is the joy I get from the work I do, people benefit. I don't really do it to benefit others (in some small way, maybe I do). I do it because it's fun. And, while I am having fun, people DO benefit.

You see... I do things. You bitch when people like me do things you disagree with.

I asked once, what others here have done to feed people in third world countries. But no one asked me the same question. I'll tell you anyway, just to show you one way my "fun" benefits others. There is an endangered species of fish in my state, called the alligator gar. Only a couple had been seen, in Tennessee, in the past 50 years. I talked to a guy with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and we decided it would be fun to try to bring them back. I would figure out where to put them, and he would raise them. At the beginning of the project, it was just the two of us. Here is a link to a story about the project, third story down:

http://library.fws.gov/birdscapes/sprsum02/wetensp.html

Here's a picture to explain why I like messing with the critters:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alligator_gar.jpg

Anyway... We got to wrestle 150 pound fish, spawn them, hatch the eggs, and release little fingerlings all over the place. For three or four years, it was just Ricky at the hatchery, and me picking release sites. It was fun, and we were bringing back an endangered species. It turns out, Ricky learned to raise them, I provided a project, and others started seeing potential. Some people realized how fast these fish grow (some of our biologists think they may be the fastest growing fish on earth). After others saw what we were doing, other states got involved in their own restoration efforts. And some Central American countries got involved. There is now an annual, international symposium, part of which is devoted to alligator gar aquaculture in Central America. See:

http://www.nicholls.edu/bayousphere/GarSession/GarBiologyandCultureSession.htm

Scientists in Central America are learning to raise the gar in tanks in little villages as a good source of protein. The Lepisosteid Research and Management Committee consists of scientists from the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica. The Central American contingent is working hard to develop methods to raise gar as an easy, reliable food source. All these other people are working their butts off. I was just having fun.

Another little deal I was involved with, for ten years, was as the deer biologist in my part of the world. I set seasons that led to about 50,000 deer being taken by hunters annually.Granted, the hunters were not living in poverty, but the deer did provide a lot of meat. I tried to get a rough idea of just how much meat was provided over my ten years. If a deer (very conservatively) has 50 pounds of edible venison, 50,000 harvested deer will produce 2.5 million pounds (1,250 tons) of venison. Over ten years, that's over 12 tons of edible meat. Certainly, I was only a minor part of the programs which produced all that, but I was involved. In that ten years, I was also the turkey biologist, and turkey harvests produced an additional 5 tons of edible meat.

And, it sure was fun.

First, of what crimes has he been convicted? Seems like we had a very good poster quit one time after being threatened with legal action for accusing someone of murder, because he was only convicted of manslaughter. Not that GWB is going to take anyone to court.

Second: We do not elect presidents based on popular vote (thank god). We elect presidents state-by-state, through the electoral college. We elect electors. We are a nation of semi-autonomous states. We, especially those of us in smaller, rural states, do not want a national popular count. The electoral college system protects us from being trampled by high density states.

Third: Do you honestly believe, just because Georgie Senior had a beer with Sandra Day O'Connor, and chased her around the desk in a frisky moment, or did tequila shots, using Pancho Villa's skull, with David Souter, that the Supreme Court Justices would willfully abandon all their values, morals, and beliefs, and they would disregard a lifetime of working to support and defend our laws and Constitution, and base a decision on "he's the son of a good buddy," rather than base a decision on case law? Do you really think they conspired to give away the Presidency of the United States as a "favor to an old school chum's son"? Gimme a break. Do you even realize how far in the outfield that comment is? It's on the warning track.

The idiot Bush, a war

First, of what crimes has he been convicted?

All right, alleged war criminal. I was being a bit inflammatory. Regardless, there is ample evidence of of George the lessers illegal war in Iraq. If Obama does not want to waste political capital investigating the lead up to the war or the torture approved by that administration, it will none the less be seen for what it is in the fullness of time. Remember Pinochet? No one forgets these events.

Second: We do not elect presidents based on popular vote (thank god).

I was referring to the highly questionable situation in the state of Florida. I am fully aware of the archaic electoral college system.

In that ten years, I was also the turkey biologist, and turkey harvests produced an additional 5 tons of edible meat.

This summer there was a new phenomena in my neighborhood. It is a very rural area, full of deer, bear, blue Heron's, etc. but this year we have been overrun by wild Turkey's. Well, not over run, because you never see two together, but I have one across the street in the bush and one down at the corner where my son waits for the school bus. Others inhabit the golf course nearby.

The thing is, there were none last year. How could they go from zero to daily sightings in one season?

They seem really easy to hunt, as in they just sit there while my dogs bark at them.

Brendan, I don't know where

Brendan,

I don't know where you live, or what your wildlife people have been doing in your part of the world, but I do know turkeys are still being stocked in new areas. I know turkeys are being stocked in Canada, and turkey flocks continue to grow in numbers and expand to formerly unoccupied ranges. Once you stock an area, as the population increases, it will expand.

I assume, if turkeys are just now showing up, they were either stocked recently, or they were stocked nearby and have just now expanded to your neighborhood.

By the way... Stocking turkeys is one of my favorite activities. You pour a bunch of corn on the ground, and when twenty or thirty are gathered around the pile, you shoot a rocket net over them. Right after you push the little red button on the blaster, it gets downright exciting, PDQ. Then you box 'em up and move them to a new release site.

If you now have a couple turkeys in your area, you should expect the population to grow. A hen lays about a dozen eggs each year. They don't all survive to become adults, but (as a rule of thumb), if more than 4.2 poults per hen survive until the end of the summer, the population will grow.

The normal year for a turkey population is: In the spring, they all split up. The gobblers call to the hens, the hens look for nesting sites, and breeding occurs. Hens sit on the eggs for about a month. When the eggs hatch, momma and the little ones hang around together through the summer. In the fall, mommas gather together with other mommas (along with their baby girls and boys). However, some of the young males will go off and form their own little groups. And, in the fall, the adult boys gather together. So, through the winter, you have mixed flocks of hens and their offspring; sometimes separate groups of young males; and groups of adult males. When spring arrives, they all split up again.

You are probably seeing them daily because they don't have huge home ranges. They sleep in a tree at night, fly down in the morning, walk around slowly all day long, and then fly back up around sunset. They hang around an area as big as they can walk around in a day or two's time. But, if you've only seen a couple of them, and never together, during the summer, I would guess they are the edge of an expanding flock. If there were substantial numbers, they would be gathered into flocks at this time of year.

They may seem easy to hunt, but, they are not. When spring comes, they get smarter. Trust me.

Don’t worry, Alan, I understand. You are right to be proud of the work you have done, and I know you are not bragging. I’m not sure if you understand me, though. You seem to think that I hold fringe opinions and that I am driven by some anti-American prejudice. Nicaragua seems to be the most intriguing bit for you.

Your fish wouldn’t have had a chance in Somoza’s Nicaragua. The country was in the hands of very few families, and they suppressed all political, economic or other progress. If you had promoted your fish there and used words like malnourishment and so on, you would have risked your life. I mentioned it earlier, but I don’t know if you have taken it in: The Sandinist movement represented about 80% of the population at the time it overthrew Somoza’s dictatorship. You seem to think that I supported a leftist fringe movement! No, it included even the right wing, for instance Violeta de Chamorro, who later became president. Are you aware that my support of the Sandinists included this horrible woman and her loathsome politics? It’s in accordance with the old communist principle “freedom is always the freedom of dissenters”, have you ever thought of it? The idea was simply to overthrow the dictator, which was only possible by violence, and establish democracy and as much justice as possible. Your government tried to prevent that, but that is their problem, not mine. (You say: “I am part of the government.” Does that mean you support dictators? You were talking of the values, morals, and beliefs of the institutions of your country: what are they?). I find it equally amazing where you defend your government, and where you oppose it.

By the way, picking coffee beans wasn’t the only thing I did on that farm. The Nicas wanted to get away from coffee and cotton, and tried to breed vegetables that have a chance in their climate. I was in the coldest part of the country, and it was potatoes there. A plant that was completely unknown there. Your fish would have been welcome too, I think.

I don’t think I “joined some little band to pick coffee beans”. We were thousands from all over Europe plus some Canadians and even some US Americans, and we had the support of far more people in our countries. Our (North-German) group included a social-democrat member of the German Bundestag who later became prime minister of one of our states. The Green Party supported this campaign too. By the way, I am one of the about 800 people who founded it, although I left it when it moved too far to the right. I am perfectly able to work from within the system too, will you ever understand that?

Brendan: On the issue of racial overtones in the opposition, I tend to agree with Maureen Dowds view of recent events.

Not surprising at all. Like you, she is a classic Liberal who finds racism the easy answer.

But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it. NYT

What a short memory Dowd has and perhaps you share her amnesia?

GOP Rep: Democrats Set the Precedent for Yelling at Presidents

I talked briefly with Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) at an early-morning House GOP briefing by Republican members of Congress on the impact of the August recess, and asked him how he’ll vote on a censure resolution against Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.).

“I’m voting against it and I hope every Republican votes against it,” said Broun. Did he worry that the Democrats were setting a precedent by targeting Wilson. “They set the precedent by yelling at Bush and calling him a liar. They’re still calling him a liar.”

Michele Malkin explains succinctly the psychology of the nut-job Maureen Dowd and her acolyte Brendan...

Democrats, Joe Wilson, Maureen Dowd, and the “R” Word

Dowd, et al, are not claiming that Wilson is actively engaging in segregation, white supremacy, or racism by shouting at the president; they don’t think he would be perfectly happy with Obamunism if Obama were white.

Rather, they attack Wilson, et al, for engaging in passive discrimination by not treating Obama with greater deference than they would treat a white liberal president: They’re not accusing us of not treating a black president as equal to a white president… they’re accusing us of not treating him as “more equal” than a white president. The accusation makes perfect sense — given the premises of the accusers.
As usual, it all comes down to axioms. Therein lies the great gulf between individualism and collectivism.

As far as Joe Wilson's "You Lie" accusation goes, he has been found to be in clearly in error.

The most controversial line of the night started with Obama's claim that illegal immigrants would not be covered under his reform plan. That prompted an outburst from Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, who shouted, "You lie!" We found Wilson was wrong and rated his heckle False.

I see no evidence that Bush was ever called a liar by a Democrat or heckled in a joint session address. Nor have you provided it. I believe strongly that Bush should have been, but he wasn't, and the crap he was selling did ruin your country, your military and plundered your treasure.

Now, we know that Joe Wilson is a proud confederate, but the discussion of racism does not centre on his outburst, it simply contributes to the vitriol, disrespect and full on lunacy of Obama's opposition. I will not call Joe Wilson a racist for it as Jimmy Carter has, but racists sure will support him for it.

The outburst (now a bumper sticker) was false, disrespectful and against the house rules and yet the teabaggers choose to be permissive, even supportive of it. Is that civilized debate? Are the accusations made against Obama true in general? No. Is there a percentage of the opposition who are racist? Yes. Is there an effort to deligitimize the President by such smears? Yes.

So, if I were Joe Wilson - "The congressman, we learned, belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, led a 2000 campaign to keep the Confederate flag waving above South Carolina’s state Capitol and denounced as a “smear” the true claim of a black woman that she was the daughter of Strom Thurmond, the ’48 segregationist candidate for president. I would be careful how I make my point understood. We know he is either dishonest or stupid, what we can't confirm is whether he is racist or just bellicose. I would prefer to think of him as just another dumb repugnican and hope that the leaders of South Carolina, at least, do not harbour the racial resentments of their forefathers. It was still a brand new low in the political discourse of the United States.

Mareen Dowd is correct to make the point and let these assholes know that people are paying attention. Conversely, Michelle Malkin is a dipshit.

Alan, What are these people

Alan,

What are these people marching for, the status quo? There is a damning article by David Frum, a George Bush and stanch Republican supporter, in today's National Post that you really ought to read.

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2009/09/15/david-frum-healthcare-costs-destroyed-the-bush-economy.aspx

'Ron Brownstein ably sums up the Census Bureau’s final report on the Bush economy.

Bottom line: not good.

in every major measurement, the Census Bureau report shows that the country lost ground during Bush’s two terms. While Bush was in office, the median household income declined, poverty increased, childhood poverty increased even more, and the number of Americans without health insurance spiked.

Over the years from 2000 to 2007, the price that employers paid for labor rose by an average of 25% per hour. But the wages received by workers were worth less in 2007 than seven years before. All that extra money paid by employers disappeared into the healthcare system: between 2000 and 2007, the cost of the average insurance policy for a family of four doubled.'

The full article from the Atlantic is a must read, and cements Bush's legacy as one of the US's worst Presidents ever.

Chris, People don't march

Chris,

People don't march for anything. They march to oppose something. I see it all the time. We get pressure from people (I won't say who, specifically, because I work for 'em) to have public meetings to "get our message out to the public." No matter how many times we tell them, "Everybody is happy, so no one will show up," we get forced to try it. (I won't go into the details, but we have political appointees as a governing body, and we get new ones fairly frequently. And the new ones always want the public meetings.) When we have "happy meetings," we will have fifteen biologists and managers there to "talk to the public," and two people will show up.

However, when we screw up, or do something the public does not like, they show up in force because they're pissed. If we screw up bad enough, you can't find an auditorium big enough to hold all the pissed off people.

So, in answer to your question: What are these people marching for, the status quo?

They're not marching for any solution to the problem. They are marching against the notion that the government can run health care better. They don't believe it. They think it will cost them a fortune to fund it. They know things are bad, but they think the government will make it even worse. They don't want to try it. And they're pissed that the current administration is trying to force it through, Clinton-style, again. They are marching to STOP something.

They are marching to STOP something.

Nicely put Alan! I suggest that explains how people of different political ideologies and agendas can come together to peacefully demonstrate. What binds them is their opposition, not racism as Brendan and Maureen Dowd suggest.

In fact, I find their race-baiting to be offensive and racist in itself. When Rep Wilson called Obama a liar, the only issue for discussion should have been whether it was true or not. Bringing race into the issue is not only a red herring, but it's inherently racist. Came across this article on point.

Worse than the stench of the stable

By A.J. DiCintio

"...Maureen Dowd was moved to write an entire column not only informing us that "what [she] heard" from Representative Joe Wilson was "You lie, boy!" but also that the racially demeaning term she hallucinated reveals the real motive of the opponents of the president's policies.

That's right, in a perfectly anti-intellectual, disgustingly irrational assertion, Dowd implies that the opposition to Obama's policies is composed of a xenophobic (former DNC chairman Don Fowler's idea) "loco fringe" given to a "shrieking lunacy."

That venom, however, only winds her up to mock protestors as a repulsive bunch of secessionist crazies.

First she quotes Fowler, a SC resident: "A good many people in South Carolina really reject the notion that we're part of the union."

Then, she invokes Congressman Jim Clyburn, D-SC, who continues the race motif by opining that the only purpose of the protestors is "delegitimizing" a black president.

Next up providing all the opinion fit to print is Frank Rich, who correctly bemoans the fact that the president turned the job of proposing a healthcare plan over to Congress.

Too bad Mr. Rich doesn't equally condemn "brilliant," transformational Obama for failing to use some of his genius to explain in exquisite honesty and simple detail exactly how he envisions paying for healthcare reform and the rest of his mad spending — and not just over the next 10 years but the ten or twenty that follow.

However, to return to the subject at hand, the following quotes sum up how Rich characterizes an opposition that has produced nothing more than a "silly summer."

inmates [who have taken] over the asylum, trivializing and poisoning the national discourse

[perpetrators of] incendiary faux controversies

[a] hard-core base of a leaderless minority party

[a] right-wing fringe . . . so deranged . . .

[participants in] crazed town-hall sideshows

There you have it, Frank Rich standing enormously shallow beside the infinitesimally small Maureen Dowd, who, in addition to sliming Obama's opponents as racists, reacted to ideas that have been hotly and honestly debated in America since the days of the Constitutional Convention with this hateful, ugly, supremely stupid comment:

Democratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoids — from Father Coughlin against F.D.R. to Joe McCarthy against Truman to the John Birchers against J.F.K. and the vast right-wing conspiracy against Bill Clinton.

Ah, liberals and the triumph of reason. What a beautiful thing to behold!"

There is plenty of room for "passionate" debate, but you fail to see how the loons among you are undermining teabaggers in general. Your permissiveness (silence) is indeed telling.

By the way, A.J. DiCintio decries the invective without addressing the charges at all, and then parts with a "Ah, liberals and the triumph of reason. What a beautiful thing to behold!". Is he retarded or just a wingnut?

Interesting point. Also a cultural difference since I believe being called a "racist" here is the nuclear bomb of epithets...far more than anti-Semite or Fascist. People (especially politicians) will go to great lengths to avoid controversies for which there is any potential of that epithet coming back on them. It's a means of shutting down discussion because it becomes all about refuting motivations that cannot be proven or defended...which is not an uncommon tactic of the (Fascist) Left over here (and in Canada apparently).

If people are marching to stop something, they are by identity defending the status quo. You said you want a reform, but not this one.

I’ve heard the words “I want this presidency to fail” a bit too often in the last months. That, plus the disproportionate participation of racists in the protests you admire, means you are in a very nasty corner: How many of these protesters are against the proposed bill, and how many are simply against the black president? Now, do you mind associating with them?

I think it's a bit audacious of you to make the closing down debate accusation Mike . Heckling at public meetings doesn't exactly move the democratic process forward.

Why can't they be proven or defended?

Joe Wilson blurted out, "You Lie!" when the president spoke and is accused of being a racist. Nothing in the two words he spoke contained any hint of racism. According to the accuser, racism is "implied" in his state of mind. Too bad there is no way Wilson can prove what is NOT in his state of mind, which doesn't even begin to address whether or not he has an obligation to do so when there is no evidence to support the accusation.

But political advantage can certainly be gained by the accuser changing the subject to the accused, rather effectively shutting down any further discussion on the veracity of Wilson's statement itself.

What is it that you do not understand?

How about the fact that Wilson in fact spoke the truth...Obama was lying (at the time) when he said that illegals would not get healthcare. Although the house bill clearly prohibited illegals from receiving healthcare, Dems had voted down Republican ammendments requiring proof of citizenship to be eligible for benefits.

In fact, there was no mechanism to prevent healthcare from being given to illegals. There was no provision establishing a penalty for fraudulantly receiving benefits based on falsely claiming citizenship. And there were specific prohibitions against withholding healthcare from persons based upon ANY status--which (as Momo puts it) by identity includes immigration status. The bottom line is the healthcare bill could not prevent what the healthcare bill prohibited. The president lied and Wilson held him accountable.

So the ultimate irony is Wilson's outburst focused attention on the lie, and likely provided the motivation for policy changes that occurred by the end of the week to add citizenship enforcement to prevent the president from appearing to be the liar that Wilson correctly called him.

The health care bill explicitly prohibited illegals from getting health care. Joe Wilson made a false accusation, as if Obama's intent was to provide health care to illegal aliens. This is pretty tenuous argumentation on your part to lean on the lack of an enforcement mechanism as proof of his intent. The end result is that you are using double speak (the lack of something as evidence of intent) to imply the Obama did lie. Yet more dishonesty on your part.

This is almost as absurd as the death panels garbage you claim are reality, even metaphorically.

This is something in American law that you need to try and understand. There are many laws on the books with no penalties. It represents nothing more than a statement of intent. But when there is no penalty assigned, no one can be charged with violation. The lack of an enforcement provision makes the law nothing more than rhetoric. So when the president asserts that illegals will not get healthcare under the house bill, it would be generous to call him stretching the truth and accurate to call him a liar.

If you still cannot grasp that a law can be a political statement with no practical effect, it is you that is either ignorant or equally dishonest.

Mike,

By focusing on enforcement you are ignoring a whole battery of methods that would make illegals gaining access to health care difficult or impossible. These methods would be more practical and inexpensive as well, which should appeal to you. Implement a simple tamper proof health card photo ID and that's it. Works here just fine and we have our fair share of illegals as well. We just like them more.

The enforcement idea is simply a red herring and you claiming Obama lied is just foolish partisan hackery.

“You're kidding, right? Anytime people are opposed to anything, they are "by identity defending the status quo"? That is, by identity, logically absurd everywhere but Momo's universe.”

There is only one universe, Mike. You must have lost touch with it thoroughly, if you don’t know that.

If I join a protest against a proposed bill, I am saying that I prefer the laws as they are, logically. I could try to convey an additional message, but (being an experienced demonstrator) I won’t, because it doesn’t work. Alan is right there: it’s stopping something (for instance “no stationing of nukes”), not changing something (for instance “out of the NATO”).

“What "status quo" do anarchists support in their protests?”

I’ve no idea, there are too few of them here. This isn’t France. A demonstration with 60 participants is pathetic, a demonstration of German anarchists would be more pathetic.

I like lively debates and that includes heckling. A half forgotten art, and that’s one of the reasons why the debates in our Bundestag are so boring nowadays. The last real outrage happened 25 years ago, isn’t that incredible? It was “By your leave, Mr Speaker: you are an asshole.” Joschka Fischer had to apologize the next day, although nobody (excepting the Speaker) doubted the truth of this statement. Nobody has ever said the same thing to our Bundespräsident though (our current one is an asshole too): it’s not done, true or not.

As I understood it, the main reason for the outrage at Wilson’s “blurting out” is that traditionally your president isn’t heckled either, isn’t it?

Now, what’s different in this president? Why doesn’t the rule apply to him? And what’s Joe Wilson’s political history? Of course everybody is thinking of racism. Even if Wilson’s intention was something else, a man with his record of racism should be extra careful. And if he doesn’t know that, he must be too stupid to be a Congressman. His constituency has made a terrible mistake.

There is no such thing as too stupid to be a Congressman. The most famous quote in this regard is:

"You cannot use tact with a Congressman! A Congressman is a hog! You must take a stick and hit him on the snout!"

The quote is over 100 years old, yet still applicable.
